I came back from my schooltrip to Hiroshima, the island of Miyajima and Kyoto.
What can I say? It was amazing. We were visiting many sights, our hotels were super-expensive Ryokan, traditional japanese hotels where all the employees wear kimono and where the head-lady of the hotel comes to you at dinner and does cultivated small-talk with you, the food was traditionally japanese and really great, the hot baths were huge and just awesome, so it was everything absolutely great.
Well, you guys know there must be some "buuut" now, right? Yeah, there was. It was just like on every class trip in highschool: as soon as there is someone next to you who is not enjoying the trip this person will start lamenting about how bad or ridiculous or uninteresting everything is, and even if you disagree with that person, you will automatically start being bored too, just because this annoying person won't stop bringing you down.
Yes, there was a person like that. A guy with whom i normally hang out quite a lot, just that the last weeks he became more and more whiny and depressed because he misses his girlfriend in germany.
It's not like I couldn't understand his feelings, but you guys know me... I just think people should keep problems like that mainly for themselves, for the others can't change anything about it anyway, so why does he bring me down the whole time?
Hell, his girlfriend is in perfect health after all, so why isn't he happy that she is not deadly ill, but instead loving and missing him? My god, man, there are other people here missing their families, friends and boy/girlfriends too! But they won't whine about it.
Anyway, this guy is at the moment either telling me how depressed he is today, or he is telling me how stupid or ridiculous this and that is.
What if I don't think it is ridiculous? What if I do, by accident, LIKE to visit a beautiful buddhist temple in wonderful sunny weather? I always tried to get a bit more into a group rather than walk alone with him all the time, which didn't work out particularly well as my other friends who i always wanted to catch up with were trying pretty hard to stay away from him because they were so pissed by his constant whining?
So i was left alone with him most of the time, and he just kept on hating everything there, and i just thought "What's your problem, man?"
Please, my friends, keep one thing in mind: We all are here for one year at this university, living for free in a student dormitory, our school fees are paid, we get a scholarship of 51000Y each month and we even got this whole schooltrip paid, travelling in expensive shinkansen, being guided everywhere, being accompanied by 2 very nice, young, not strict teachers, we lived in those really expensive hotels (our teachers, who get, as university teachers, pretty well-paid, said they would have NEVER booked in those hotels if they had gone on a trip there, because they were so very expensive), we got food and just everything, so why does this guy have to complain about EVERYTHING?
I do, of course, also make fun of many things here often. There are many things which i find ridiculous. Still, it's one thing to make fun of it on an internetblog or SOMETIMES with your friends, and a totally different thing to constantly offend and confront japanese people, and especially your teachers. And I got really annoyed by this.
Another weird thing was, that the dog girl, you remember, was also on this trip and she was so super nice to me that it got even a bit scary.... As it seems she was more or less a bit sorry for all the trouble we had and wanted to make up with me. Well, I was happy about that, of course, because I still like talking to her, but it felt a bit strange after all that happened.
Oh, and we have that unbelievably stressy guy in our group, Ricardo. Yeah, he was so stressy again. He was always late for appointments, like, when they said "we are going to leave at 12.40" he would come 12.41 or 12.42, which is of course just a short time, but when everybody else comes back 5-2 minutes before that so we can leave in time, it is ANNOYING. And it is not exactly polite, and above that, it always comes down to all the germans. Yes, we are seen as a group after all. Fortunately our teachers already knew Ricardo as ...well.... let's face it, as an IDIOT. So they didn't blame us, but still, the bitter taste remains.
On the last day of our trip we had time to go wherever we wanted until 3.30, when we were to meet at Kyoto station because our Shinkansen to Hakone would leave at 4...
Me and my friends (depressed-guy inc.) decided to go to a temple and then to the emperor's temple. Stress-guy tried to call us for about 5 times each one. We knew perfectly well, why. He wanted to join us. But we didn't want him to join, so we didn't reply his calls. Remember the last time I responded one of his calls? That was on New Year's Eve, and he spoiled it for me. So I didn't feel that bad for not answering.
We arrived at the station just in time, and who was not there? Ricardo.
3.35.... Ricardo is not there.
The teachers start to look around a bit nervously...
3.40..... The teachers call his cell phone....
3.41..... The teacher who just talked to him explains us that he was like "What? It is already that late? Oh my god, I didn't notice! I'm coming to the station right now!"
HOW STUPID IS THAT GUY? My god, how can you not check the watch when you are to meet with your travel group at a station?
He didn't arrive in time, of course. So we went back without him. It was very nice.
He got a ticket for a night bus and arrived the next morning...... Hahaha, well, serves you right, stress-guy.
Oh, and it's my birthday now!
Happy Birthday To Me!
Hi Nori,
happy birthday to you (a bit late, did not check your site for the last few days)!
ReplyDeleteand yeah, people who constantly complain about everything are quite annoying, know some of those here too. so you have my regrets. but there's a fine tool to prevent your ears from being bitten too much: don't they have something like ohropax in japan =P
however, just don't respond to their trash, after a while, they should feel like talking to a wall. worked for me so far. another option would be to tell them to stop or leave. would be rude, but effective.
what about my last days...
had to play mozarts second satz from his klarinettenkonzert. i love to pretend being an orchestra Oo. sometimes, playing the piano just plain sucks. i'm so jealous! i saw an orchestra, in which a friend of mine plays solo-flute (wow!), thats so amazing when they all play together and wham! your ears nearly get blown away from the sound. other thing is, that my friend missed the beginning of half of her parts, hehe^^. if someone out there knows an orchestra that needs a pianoplayer just for korrepitation or sth, that means NOT for soloconcerts (duh!), plz call me under... Oo
i wonder whether that stupid guy ricardo could be some guy i know... there was a guy with the same name in golm, he disappeared after the second semester. and he was such an idiot. he was always late, too. the best thing he ever said was "i overslept the station (golm) and awoke in henningsdorf (where is THAT?). so i went back home, sorry!" DUH?
ummmmm. i passed my intermediate exams. it was so strange. they asked about the ancient greeks (music of the ancient greeks? think! and think hard!), the early development of the organum, about strawinsky and schönberg (i did not even have a vorlesung about them!) and (hit me like a truck) about the kirchensonate. how many instruments, composers, how would the first satz look and the second... looking forward to my real exams Oo. what you ever wanted to know about music history, here you learn it..."did mozart have tripper?" "um yeah, you know, he was such a wild boy" cool thing...
my attitude towards studying is not the best nowadays. it feels that way: in school, they filled us with wisdom and hopefully usefull facts (m-e-s-a-i-l-l-a-n-c-e?), at university, they are filling us with wisdom and hopefully usefull facts (mozart was a great composer. REALLY?!). do you see the difference? i don't. can't stand that.
i wish you a great week and a great weekend in farfaraway japan.
and i hope you got dozens of presents!
